The Canadian government has issued a public tender for the disposal of a large air-supported structure

2026-09-11

On September 2, a large air-supported membrane structure belonging to the government of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, which had not been put into use due to the cancellation of the original project, entered into a public disposal process, drawing attention to the transfer and reuse of air-supported membrane assets.

According to an official government announcement, the large air-supported membrane structure, which is approximately 100,000 square feet (about 9,290 square meters), was originally procured for the Kenmount Crossing Acute Care Campus project. Following the project's cancellation, the air supported structure remained in storage, never having proceeded to the installation or operational stages. As the air supported structure is currently completely unused and the government has received inquiries from multiple potential buyers, a decision has been made to dispose of it through a public competitive tender process.

What makes this disposal special is that, although the inflated air dome was designed according to its intended equipment and purpose, it did not lose all its value after the original project was cancelled, but instead entered a new asset disposal phase. This demonstrates that the value of an air-supported structure is not strictly confined to its original intended application. When the structural form, membrane material condition, supporting equipment, and new site conditions meet the requirements, air-supported membrane structures have the potential for further disassembly, transportation, and reuse. This also reminds the air-supported membrane industry and buyers that, in addition to focusing on the span, functional use, membrane material performance, and construction costs during the project planning stage, they also need to consider the possible future changes in the project's use.

Currently, the air-supported membrane structure is still in the public bidding stage (as of September 17th), and the final buyer and subsequent application direction have not yet been announced.

As air dome projects continue to expand in scale, the management experience gained from similar incidents will provide a reference for the industry to further improve its project planning and service system.
